Redbone Coonhound Dog Breed Information

Breed: Redbone Coonhound
Also Called:
Height: The Redbone Coonhound is about 21-27 inches tall.
Weight: The Redbone Coonhound weighs between 45-65 lbs.
Colors: The Redbone Coonhound can be solid red. Can also have white on the chest and feet.
General Appearance: The Redbone Coonhound is surefooted and swift, even on the most difficult terrain. Well-balanced, with a flashy red coat and excellent cold nose, the powerfully built Redbone mingles handsome looks with a confident air and fine hunting talents.
Temperment: The Redbone Coonhound is even-tempered at home but an aggressive hunter. A good family dog that likes to please. Good with children and other pets.
Care: The Redbone Coonhound requires minimal grooming. They need to be bathed and brushed occasionally. Keep ears in check to avoid infection.
Health Concerns:
Training: The Redbone Coonhound is easily trained and should be trained for hunting. Hunting comes naturally, start on scent when young.
Activity: The Redbone Coonhounds need to be exercised daily. Because of their high endurance level, they are a great dog to take on long walks, jogs or hiking. Webbed feet are great for swimming.
Life Span: The Redbone Coonhound lives an average life of 12-14 years.
Litter Size: The Redbone Coonhound has an average litter of 6-10 puppies.
Country of Origin: The Redbone Coonhound originated in the USA.
Brief History: In the 1800’s when the Foxhound wasn’t efficient enough, they were crossed with a Bloodhound and later on with an Ancient Irish Hound (which is probably the reason for the occasional white on their chest and feet). This produced a beautiful, smart, fast, efficient scent hound. In 1840 George F.L. Birdsong obtained the foundation stock of today’s dogs. He obtained the pack from Dr. Thomas Henry.
Registries: UKC
