White spots are only allowed on the chest area. Dogs may NOT have a complete ring neck or leopard spotted. They can be brindle or tiger-stripe or black, or black and tan.

Eyes are large, well-opened, never narrow or slanted. Color of eyes is medium brown or darker. Never any glass eyes, like the Catahoula breed. Ears are attached and set high on the head. Never down on the side of the head. Ears should be thick and hang freely. The Black Mouth Cur's ears should never tough the nose, unless stretched or pulled to do so. Straight front and hind legs of the Black Mouth Cur are parallel to their straight and up - right body. Back legs are never to resemble the shepherd breeds. Tail is medium in length and must be 10'' long unless it has been cut (cutting is not advised). Must be well coated with hair and never flag tailed. Black Mouth Curs should not have a natural bob tail. The Black Mouth Cur's coat can be coarse of fine hair, but never long or woolly. The Black Mouth Cur's back is broad, well muscled, and never swayed or humped. The dog should be a silent trailer but semi or open is acceptable. Cur dogs should never bawl, but a medium ringing cry or yodel is OK. Chop on tree or at bay. The Black Mouth Cur should walk fast. From a walk the dog should go into a canter-type gallop and then into a stretched out type of hard run.
Temperment: The Black Mouth Cur has a diposition unlike any other breed or strain of cur dog. The dog can be trained to be very protective of property and family. You can predict what they will do under stressful situations. They have a very even temperment and are loyal to their masters and all members of the family that raises them. Black Mouth Curs are exceptionally affectionate toward women and children. They will often not let a strange man even touch them, which makes it almost impossible for them to be stolen. They will give their life (if needed) to protect their master.
Care: The Black Mouth Cur has short hair and is easy to groom. Occasionally comb or brush to remove dead and loose hairs. Bathe only when necessary so that you don't dry out the skin and keep ears trimmed of excess hair.
Health Concerns:
Training: The Black Mouth Cur is a fast, hard hunter which runs with exceptional speed. Locating type of tree dogs that will follow game from tree to tree because of their desire to kill. The Black Mouth Cur will tree by sight, winding or trailing game to the tree. The dog will bay or catch on hogs, working the hog to disadvantage before catching. The Black Mouth Cur is an excellent fighter on hogs or bears, sure footed and fast. The dog is always charging and bites because of it's courage.
Activity: The Black Mouth Cur is a hunting dog that needs plenty of exercise outdoors.
Life Span: The Black Mouth Cur lives an average life of 12-16 years.
Litter Size: The Black Mouth Cur has an average litter of 4-10 puppies.
Country of Origin: The Black Mouth Cur originated in the USA.
Brief History: The origin of the Blackmouth Cur is uncertain. Some writers have claimed that the breed originated in the mountains of Tennessee while others believe the breed originated in Mississippi. In any event, these dogs were widely used by early American settlers as all-round working dogs. As Americans moved west, the Blackmouth Curs moved with them, serving as a hunting dog and family guardian. It was a Black Mouth Cur that starred in Disney's classic movie 'Old Yeller'. A good book to read about the history of the Black Mouth Cur is 'The Big Thicket Legacy', written by Campbell and Lynn Loughmiller. The book was written about the people and early times of frontier life in the area of southeast Texas.
Registries: NKC, CKC, UKC, SBMCBA (Southern Black Mouth Cur Breeders Assoc.)
