| General Appearance: The Basenji is a small, short haired hunting dog. This dog breed is short backed and lightly built, appearing high on the leg compared to its length. The dog's wrinkled head is carried high on a well arched neck and the tail is set high and curled. The Basenji is both elegant and graceful with a demeanor of inquiring alertness. The dog's balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to move with ease and agility. The Basenji hunts by both sight and scent. It is mute a mute and does not bark. The dog's forehead is wrinkled, tail is tightly curled and it's gait is swift and effortless. |

| Brief History: Basenji-type dogs are depicted on the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs and date back to early 3600 B.C. Many details of their origins are unclear, but the Basenji is thought to have come from a purebred dog used by the Pygmies for hunting in the Congo. The Basenji was imported to England in the 1930's and then made their way to America in 1941. |
