The dog's head is broad with ears that are triangular and erect when alert. The Alaskan Malamute's muzzle is bulky, only slightly diminishing in width from root to the dog's nose. The muzzle is not pointed or long, yet not stubby. The dog's coat is thick with a coarse guard coat of sufficient length to protect a woolly undercoat. The Alaskan Malamute's tail is well furred and carries over the back. The dog's tail will have the appearance of a waving plume. |

| Brief History: The Alaskan Malamute was developed by a tribe of nomadic Inuit people called Malamutes who lived in the upper part of western Alaska. These people wanted a large, strong, sled-pulling dog that was a heavy hauler, so that they could use them as draft animals. During the white man's settling of Alaska the Alaskan Malamute was used for hunting and hauling in large numbers. |
